Let’s first clarify the current situation: The EUDR already entered into force on 29 June 2023 – along with the obligation to submit initial reports by 30 December 2024. However, on 04 December 2024, a final decision was made to extend the deadline by one year. 

Large companies therefore have until 30 December 2025 to fully implement the EUDR requirements. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will be affected by the reporting obligation from 30 June 2026 onwards. The EUDR is not part of the EU Omnibus regulations.

So things are getting serious now if you manufacture or trade in EUDR-relevant products. The following aspects will be coming your way over the next few years:

Companies must demonstrate that the products or raw materials they trade in are deforestation-free. Accordingly, potential risks along the supply chain must be identified and measures taken to minimize these risks.

The EUDR requires disclosure of the origin of raw materials. This also requires that exact GPS data for the cultivation areas be made transparent.

Companies are required to document all measures, risks, and required information. Based on this, reports must be prepared regularly and forwarded to the competent authorities.

Non-compliance with the EUDR entails severe penalties and sanctions.   • EUDR expertise and experience
    When selecting EUDR consulting, the specialist expertise and experience of the consulting provider are of central importance. You should make sure that the service provider has a comprehensive understanding of the EU Deforestation Regulation and its requirements. Particularly important here is experience with supply chain management and sustainability strategies in order to efficiently manage the EUDR challenges of traceability and risk assessment of raw materials.
    It is also important to ensure that expertise in the raw materials or HS codes you manufacture or trade is available. In particular, a consultancy’s experience with importers of a specific commodity is a key factor. Managing EUDR raw materials sometimes has to be done completely differently, and it is an immense advantage to draw on solutions already proven in other projects.
  • EUDR software solutions and tools
    Make sure that consultants support you neutrally in selecting suitable EUDR software and do not work only with one provider. The software is your key tool for automating reporting (e.g., when transferring data to the EU portal Traces).     Implementing the EU Deforestation Regulation requires not only technical adjustments for reporting, but also a fundamental understanding of the new requirements by the specialist departments and procurement. Here, too, the specifics of the respective EUDR raw materials (commodities) must be conveyed to the team. In workshops, the external consultant must therefore address the basic compliance requirements as well as individual criteria.

Consulting or a tool? Does EUDR software replace consulting?
